6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Peru

LIMA - An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted northern Peru early Wednesday.

According to Peru's Geophysical Institute, the quake, which occurred at 0415 GMT in Peru's northern province of Amazonas, was at a depth of 219 km and lasted 15 seconds.

The quake was also felt in nearby provinces including San Martin, Lambayeque and La Libertad. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Peru, located on the Pacific seismic belt, is a quake-prone country. In August 2007, Peru was hit by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake that claimed more than 600 lives and destroyed some 70,000 houses.
