Highway Collapses In Peru
Earthquake
LIMA - There has been a major disruption to
transport but so far no injuries from a
6.4-magnitude earthquake that jolted
northern Peru Wednesday, according to local
media.
Local radio station Radio Programas del Peru
(RPP) said a highway linking Amazonas
province to the country's northwestern coast
was affected in many parts. Media reported a
one-kilometer section had completely
collapsed and a landslide near the highway
left many buses, trucks and other vehicles
stranded.
According to Peru's Geophysical Institute,
the quake occurred at 0415 GMT in Amazonas
and lasted 15 seconds.
The most affected area was Aserradero, Bagua
Grande, capital of Utcubamba province, 46 km
east of the earthquake's epicenter, which
had a depth of 219 km.
The quake was also felt in nearby provinces,
including San Martin, Lambayeque and La
Libertad.
Peru, located on the Pacific seismic belt,
is a quake-prone country. In August 2007,
Peru was hit by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake
that claimed more than 600 lives and
destroyed some 70,000 houses. |
