Desamparados Bridge Out For Two Weeks

The work to repair the bridge over the Jorco river that connects Desamparados and Aserrí will take at least 15 days according to the experts of the Dirección de Puentes del Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) and the Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi).

The bridge was closed Wednesday afternoon after an inspection of the bridge showed serious structural problems that, experts concluded, could cause the bridge to collapse with the passing of vehicles.

The construction company MECO was given the contract and has machinery on site by late Thursday.

Francisco Jiménez, ministro of the MOPT, said that in addition to repairing the structure, the river will also be dredged as part of the work.

Residents of the area, as well as those passing through, will have to be patient and the alternate routes aren't able to handle the increase traffic, causing tremendous congestion in the area.

On Thursday the sudden closure of the bridge the night before meant many getting up to two hours late for work.
