25% Of Construction Projects Without Permits

At least one quarter of all construction carried out in Costa Rica are without permits, according to a survey by the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y Arquitectos (CFIA).

Olman Vargas, head of the CFIA, the situation impacts municipalities, the environment and security for workers who are no covered with an insurance policy.

Vargas says that in many of the cases the builder does not meet the requirements and to refuse the work, decide to do illegally, while others do so in an attempt to avoid municipal fees and taxes.

Vargas added that in 2008 the figure was 21%, in 2009 it climbed to 25% and expects the rate to climb even further if the government doesn't take action.
