MOPT Evaluates Suspension Of Tolls During Emergencies On The On San José - Caldera

The next time heavy rains for the partial or total closure of the San José - Caldera like occurred this past week, there is a possibility of tolls being open. At least that is the focus of an analysis by the MOPT to determine to what extent the road concessionaire, Autopistas del Sol, is required to relinquish the charging of tolls in emergency situations.

Maria Lorena López, vice-ministra of the MOPT, issued the statement on Friday, following an outcry by many drivers on the autopista San José - caldera who were forced to pay tolls during the two hours the road was completely closed between Atenas and Orotina last week.

In addition, many drivers who turned back complained to the MOPT of having to pay double tolls, as Autopistas demanded a toll for leaving the blocked road.

López said that the concession contract is being reviewed to establish parameters of action to be taken in the event of an emergency.

The viceministra also pointed out that MOPT engineers have identified the most dangerous points on the highway, so that Autopistas makes the corrections.
