FMNL Readies for Upcoming Elections

SAN SALVADOR - El Salvador's Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front announced its decision to successfully face the upcoming elections and ensure that the current process of change continues.

The party plans to run in the 2012, 2014 and 2015 elections, general coordinator Medardo Gonzalez said.

The announcement was made as the FMLN held its 26th national convention on Sunday, ending with an internal election aimed at "strengthening the party's determination to work for democracy," according to Salvadoran Vice President alvador Sánchez Ceren, a historic leader of the party.

The FMLN must work toward a truly democratic society, where there is no exclusion or injustice, and poverty is eliminated, Ceren emphasized.

The congress elected the part's 57-member National Council and 19-member Political Committee, and reaffirmed founding member Medardo Gonzalez as general coordinator.

Violeta Menjivar, former mayor of the capital and deputy minister of health, was elected assistant coordinator.

The newly-elected party officers will take their posts on Dec. 12, for five-year terms.

The FMLN was founded on its October 10, 1980, by the five organizations fighting the military dictatorship, and following the 1992 peace agreement, it became a legal political party.

Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes, the FMLN's candidate, was elected on March 15, 2009.
