flatly
denied
on
Tuesday
that
Nicaraguan
troops
crossed
into
Costa
Rican
territory
as
claimed
by the
Chinchilla
government,
who
accused
Nicaragua
"once
again"
violating
Costa
Rica's
sovereignty.

"The Nicaraguan army has always been in Nicaragua and has never crossed into Costa Rica", said Pastora, who is better known in Nicaragua as "Comandante Cero" and hand picked by Nicaragua's president, Daniel Ortega, in charge of the San Juan river dredging operation.
"Our soldiers are not stupid. We are not idiots to cross into Costa Rican territory and can assure you that it was Costa Rican armed forces that entered Nicaraguan territory", said Pastora accusingly.
Pastor said that "once again" Nicaragua will put forth proof before the Organization of American States (OAS) that Costa Rica has violated Nicaragua's sovereignty.
Costa Rica on Tuesday asked the OAS to intervene after a fly over on Monday of the Isla Calero, a small uninhabited island on the Costa Rican side of the river, revealed Nicaraguan troops camping out on the island and including the hoisting of the Nicaraguan flag. |
Pastora,
however,
argues
that the
island
belong
"1000%
to
Nicaragua",
citing
the
Jerez-Cañas
treaty
of 1858
that
sets out
territorial
limits
of the
border
between
the two
countries.
Pastora
says
that
behind
Costa
Rica's
objection
of the
dredging
of the
river is
the real
reason,
the
worry of
Nicaragua's
development.
