Escazú
Landslide

The Cruz
Roja
(Red
Cross)
reports
recovering
20
bodies
buried
under
the
landslide
in
Escazú
early
this
morning,
while 10
more are
missing
and
feared
trapped
under
the mud
and
debris.
Residents
of Las
Lajas in
San
Antonio
de
Escazú
said
they
head a
thundering
noise
following
midnight.
In total
five
homes we
completed
reduced
to
nothing
under
the
force of
water
and mud
coming
off the
"cerro"
(peak).
Many
others
woke up
this
morning
to the
horrible
news of
their
friends
and
nieghbours
missing,
horrified
of how
close
disaster
has come
to their
lives
while
sleeping.
The
Organismo
de
Investigación
Judicial
(OIJ)
confirms
that
among
the
recovered
bodies
are
eight
men, six
women
and six
children.
While
search
and
rescue
efforts
continue,
as
residents
join the
Cruz
Rojas
and
workers
of the
Comision
Nacional
de
Emergencias
(CNE),
the fear
is the
soft
soil and
further
landslides.
In
addition
to the
tragedy
in
Escazú,
the many
others
areas in
the
country
have
been
affected
by the
almost
48 hours
of
constant
rain.
In
Parrita,
Garabite
(Jacó)
and
Aguirre
(Quepos)
hundreds
have
taken
refuge
in
shelters.
In
Parrita,
the Cruz
Roja
reports
a number
of
missing
persons.
The
government
has
caled a
"Alerta
Roja"
(Red
Alert)
for the
entire
country
and
expected
to sign
a
national
emergency
decree,
which
would
transfer
funds
from
public
institution
to where
most
needed.
In
addition,
presidenta
Laura
Chinchilla,
has
called
on
neighbouring
countries
for
assistance,
especially
with air
transport
to be
able to
reach
areas
isolated
by
damage.
The
Instituto
Meteorológico
Nacional
(IMN) -
national
weather
service
- is
forecasting
more
rain
until
Friday.
