Miraflores
Declaration

The
presidents
of
Venezuela,
Hugo
Chavez,
and
Colombia,
Juan
Manuel
Santos,
reaffirmed
their
decision
to boost
bilateral
relations
by
signing
the
Miraflores
Declaration.
The
document,
presented
to the
media
after
its
signing,
highlights
the
progress
achieved
by five
commissions
created
by
Chavez
and
Santos
in their
first
meeting
on
August
10 in
the
Colombian
city of
Santa
Marta.
The
Declaration
includes
the
creation
of a
Bilateral
Economic-Productive
Committee,
aimed at
fostering
productive
teamwork
in the
textile,
food,
livestock,
automotive,
energy,
and
housing
sectors,
among
others.
It was
also
agreed
to
battle
businesses,
prevent
overpricing,
facilitate
exports,
and
boost
tourism
with new
destinations
and
frequencies.
In
addition,
the two
sides
decided
to
create
joint
youth
and
child
symphonic
orchestras,
cultural
actions
proposed
by the
Commission
for a
Social
Investment
Plan in
the
Border
Zone.
Regarding
the
development
of
mutual
infrastructure
works,
the
document
refers
to the
construction
of a
bridge
linking
the
Venezuelan
state of
Tachira
with the
Colombian
department
of Norte
de
Santander,
beginning
in
January
2011.
Also
highlighted
was the
opening
of a new
international
border
crossing
between
Apure
(Venezuela)
and
Arauca
(Colombia).
