Colombian's Former President Uribe Summoned to Testify on Killings

WASHINGTON -  Relatives of 500 Colombians killed by paramilitary groups asked ex President Alvaro Uribe to testify in the trial opened against a US firm involved in the incidents.

Human rights activists and members of the Conrad Scherer law firm made public their legal complaint, as part of a suit against Drummond mining firm.

Uribe's summons is based on his "direct knowledge regarding main aspects of the case," according to lawyers.

In May 2009, relatives of the victims filed a suit against Drummond before a federal court in Birmingham, Alabama, the home to Drummond.

According to the accusation, during the Uribe Administration (August 2002- August 2010) there were attempts to remove evidence of Drummond's alleged support to paramilitary groups.

In 1997-2007, the company gave money to fund the war against the guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

The lawyers also referred to "the government-backed Army's broad support to protect Drummond's mining facilities in Colombia."

Uribe's appearance has been scheduled for November 22, but it is yet to be known whether the politician will show up at the Washington-based hearing.

The former president is currently giving classes in the Georgetown University in Washington.
