Zelaya
Condemns
Killings
of
Peasants
in
Honduras
TEGUCIGALPA
- Former
Honduran
President
Manuel
Zelaya
condemned
the
killing
of five
peasants
in the
Valle
del
Aguan
and
expressed
deep
regret
and
support
to the
families
of the
victims.
On
Monday,
the
employer''s
private
guards
of
Miguel
Facusse
riddled
with
bullets
to the
peasants
Ignacio
Reyes,
Teodoro
Acosta,
Siriaco
Muñoz,
Raul
Castillo
and Jose
Luis
Sauceda,
members
of the
Unified
Movement
of
Peasants
of Aguan
(MUCA).
The
multiple
murders
occurred
in the
north,
where
there is
a
conflict
for
several
decades,
as
powerful
businessmen
fraudulently
seized
the
fertile
lands of
Aguan
Valley.
MUCA
leaders
of the
Agrarian
Platform
and
humanitarian
organizations
warned
that the
main
trigger
for the
violence
is the
unwillingness
of the
government
to solve
the
agrarian
conflict.
Honduras
is one
of the
countries
with
highest
rates of
inequality
in human
development,
according
to a
report
released
Friday.
In this
country
one of
every
100
farmers
own
one-third
of the
best
land,
while
375, 000
small
farmers
have
nowhere
to grow.
As a
result
of
inequality,
60
percent
of
Hondurans
live
below
the
poverty
line, a
problem
exacerbated
in rural
areas
where
the rate
rises to
65.4
percent
of the
population.
