Florida
Credit
Union
CEO
Meets
With
Costa
Rica's
Presidenta
Chinchilla
Southern
Florida
credit
union
executives
traveled
to Costa
Rica
earlier
this
month to
share
ideas
and tour
similar
financial
institutions,
and one
local
executive
earned
an
audience
with
Costa
Rica's
president.
David
Southall,
president
and CEO
of
Innovations
Federal
Credit
Union,
had the
opportunity
to chat
with
presidenta
Laura
Chinchilla
Miranda.
The
informal
hour-long
meeting
held in
a
presidential
conference
room on
Nov. 11
allowed
Southall
and
other
credit
union
leaders
an
opportunity
to learn
more
about
the
country
from its
leader.
“I felt
very
fortunate
to be
able to
be a
part of
that
group
that met
with
her,”
Southall
said.
“When we
went
down
there we
didn’t
realize
we were
going to
be able
to meet
with
her, so
it was a
great
surprise.”
Costa
Rica has
76
credit
unions
with
600,000
members.
The
credit
unions
provide
more
than
just
financial
services,
and the
president
spoke
about
the
importance
of
credit
unions,
Southall
said.
“There
was a
lot
going on
while we
were
there,
and she
ended up
canceling
all her
appointments
that day
but kept
the one
with
us,”
Southall
said.
“It was
nice to
hear how
the
government
supported
credit
unions.”
The
League
of
Southeastern
Credit
Unions
formed a
partnership
with the
credit
unions
in Costa
Rica
last
year.
“It’s a
partnership
like
having a
sister
city,”
Southall
said.
Last
year,
members
from
Costa
Rican
credit
unions
traveled
to the
United
States
to visit
credit
unions.
The
Costa
Rica
delegation
visited
Panama
City
(Florida)
to see
the
Innovations
operations.
Although
credit
unions
are
different
in the
two
countries,
Southall
stressed
the
importance
and
mission
of
credit
unions
to
provide
assistance
and help
people
in times
of need.
The
Costa
Rican
credit
unions
have
significantly
fewer
resources,
especially
in terms
of
technology,
but they
serve as
role
models
of
“people
helping
people,”
Southall
said.
“When
people
are
having a
tough
time we
do what
credit
unions
are
supposed
to do,
we are
helping,”
Southall
said.
