Brazilian
President
Advocates
for
Regional
Unity
GEORGETOWN
-
Brazilian
President
Luiz
Inacio
Lula da
Silva
advocated
for the
elimination
of the
asymmetries
stopping
the
integration
of South
America,
in his
speech
in the
Summit
of the
Union of
South
American
Nations
(UNASUR)
Friday.
"None of
our
countries
will
really
be
prosperous,
without
all of
us being
also
prosperous,"
said the
Brazilian
president
in the
UNASUR
Summit
being
held in
the
capital
of
Guyana.
Lula da
Silva
also
said
that
South
America
has
learned
to live
democratically
with
diversity,
as
exemplified
with the
harmony
now
existing
between
Colombia
and
Venezuela,
emphatically
defending
the
action
of the
Latin
American
governments
and
their
right to
take
part in
world
decisions.
He also
talked
about
the work
of
deceased
former
Argentine
president
and
UNASUR
president
Nestor
Kirchner.
"Kirchner
will
always
be a
source
of
inspiration
for the
South
American
politicians,"
he
stated.
At the
end of
his
intervention,
Lula
expressed
gratitude
to
Ecuadorian
President
Rafael
Correa,
for his
work as
pro
tempore
president
of
UNASUR,
and
welcomed
Guyana,
which
will be
the
successor,
in his
last
appearance
as
President
of
Brazil,
since he
will
give the
power to
president-elect
Dilma
Rousseff
in
January
2011.
Statements
from his
Paraguayan
counterpart
Fernando
Lugo
show
that
Lula da
Silva
counts
on the
necessary
consensus
to be
the next
UNASUR
Secretary
General,
replacing
Kirchner.
The
regional
organization
is
formed
by
Argentina,
Brazil,
Bolivia,
Colombia,
Chile,
Ecuador,
Guyana,
Peru,
Paraguay,
Surinam,
Uruguay
and
