Chile: End of Mapuche Hunger Strike

SANTIAGO -  Representatives of the Mapuche hunger strike in Chile announced the end of the crackdown began last July 12 to protest the anti-terrorism law.

The news was confirmed near dawn by the Archbishop of the Chilean province of Concepción, Ricardo Ezzati and the imprisoned indigenousâÖ spokeswoman Natividad Llanquileo.

Ezzati, who acted as facilitator of dialogue between the parties read a statement through which he made public the Government's proposals aimed at the fast cessation.

He stressed in particular the withdrawal of the suits against the antiterrorism law and the end of the double prosecution, which would imply judging the defendants only in civilian courts.

Government sources stated that the measure was deposed by the rebels of the prisons of Concepcion, Lebu, and Temuco cities, but that determination has not been confirmed yet by the nine strikers of Angol prison, in the territory of Arauco.

The announcement came to public notice a few minutes after a statement by the Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter, who had said to feel hopeful about the outcome of the last hours negotiations, held in the city council of Arauco, in the south of Chile.

"I have great hope. I have a feeling we're in a good way, we will be able to find a good agreement to settle the hunger strike," said Hinzpeter in statemens to the press.
