Quake
Shook
Costa
Rica
Friday
Night
It was
few
minutes
before
8:00pm
when a
5.9
magnitude
earthquake
shook
Costa
Rica's
capital,
San
José,
startling
residents
and
knocking
items
off
shelves.
Some
people
fled
their
homes
and
buildings
were
evacuated
as
alarms
went off
all over
the
city.
The U.S.
Geological
Survey
reports
the
tremor
occurring
at a
depth of
98
kilometres
(60
miles)
some 45
kilometres
(30
miles)
North
North
West
(NNW) of
San
José,
near
Zarcero.
The
tremor
lasted
between
30 and
40 seconds,
but felt
longer
to many,
some
saying
they
felt a
swaying
motion,
like
being on
a boat,
rather
than a
jolt.
The Cruz
Roja
(Red
Cross)
and the
Comisión
Nacional
de
Emergencias
(CNE)
said no
reports
of
damages
or
injuries
were
received.
The
Observatorio
Vulcanologico
y
Sismologico
de Costa
Rica (OVISCORI)
- the
local
volcano
and
Seismic
Observatory
-
reported
the
tremor
at a
magnitude
of
5.5.
The
tremor
was felt
also in
places
like
Orotina,
Grecia,
Cartago,
San
Ramón,
Puntarenas
and
Guanacaste.
In
Escazú
and
Santa
Ana the
tremor
is said
to be
responsible
for a
mudslide,
the same
in Sana
Cruz in
Guanacaste.
Cellular
phone
lines
were out
of
service
for more
than 15
minutes
following
the
quake,
cutting
off many
from
calling
their
families
and
friends.
At
9:30pm
the
OVSICORI
reported
an
aftershock
of 4.2
located
in the
area of
San
Isidro
de El
General
(Perez
Zeledon),
southeast
of San
José.
