Rica
Looks to
Canada
For
Renewables
Investment
Costa
Rica's
foreign
minister,
René
Castro,
and the
secretary
of state
of
Canada,
Peter
Kent
recently
discussed
Canada
potentially
investing
in the
Central
American
country
to
enable
it to
develop
a number
of
renewable
energy
projects.
Several
Canadian
companies
are
involved
in
geothermal
projects
in Latin
American
countries.
The
Central
America
nations
are also
looking
at
increasing
the use
of
hydropower
to
diminish
their
dependency
on oil
when it
comes to
generating
electricity.
Wind
farm
projects
also are
proliferating
in the
region,
and
Canadian
companies
are well
positioned
to take
advantage
of that
growth,
it has
been
said.
According
to a
report
in
Electrosector,
Central
America
has an
estimated
potential
of 31
000 MW
from
renewable
energy
sources,
of which
30 per
cent
would
from
wind
farms
and 60
per cent
from
hydroelectric
plants.
