Comprehensive Plan in El Salvador to Improve Public Schools

SAN SALVADOR - Education Ministry in El Salvador develops a full plan to improve public schoolâ�Ös conditions, the Minister of Education, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, announced.

This Ministry has invested in the last months $ 55.2 million in the program Improving School Environments and Educational Resources, Sanchez Ceren said, also vice President of the republic.

He said that these funds were intended for repairs, additions and furnishing two thousand 763 schools.

After taking up on June 1st, 2009, the government of Mauricio Funes started a plan to give free uniforms, shoes and school supplies to students in this sector.

Besides, a plan to teach 17.9 percent of the population reading and writing is also developed.

Sánchez Cerén one of the leaders of the Frente Farabundo for National Freedom (FMLN), announced that the program will continue throughout the period of government, culminating in June 2014.

He noted that by 2011 they will work in 352 schools, with an investment of $ 27.9 million, in 2012, other 581, with 23.3 million and in 2013 25 schools will benefit, with funds of 8.4 million projected.

Quoted by the newspaper El Mundo, Sanchez Ceren said the deficit accumulated in the sector reached 328.8 million dollars, in addition to the damage caused in recent months for tropical storms to 994 centers.
