Convokes
2011
General
Elections

- The
Nicaraguan
Supreme
Electoral
Council
officially
convoked
political
parties
with
judicial
personality
to take
part in
the
general
elections
of 2011.
The
general
elections
were
fixed
for
Sunday,
November
6, 2011,
to
choose
the
President,
the
Vicepresident,
the
national
and
municipal
deputies
and the
deputies
for the
Central
American
Parliament
(PARLACEN).
Supreme
Electoral
Council
president
Roberto
Rivas
said it
will be
an open
process
for the
Nicaraguan
people,
the
political
organizations
and the
communications
media,
and
political
parties
and
organizations
should
have
their
legal
documents
updated
to
participate.
The
Council
elaborated
a
schedule
that
will be
submitted
for
consultation
with the
political
parties
authorized
to
participate.
These
organizations
should
present
their
observations
by
November
15,
2010.
For the
political
groups
to make
their
respective
negotiations,
a time
limit of
four
months
was
fixed
starting
from
Thursday
for the
constitution
of
political
alliances.
The
organizations
participating
in the
general
elections
should
present
their
candidates
for
President
and
Vicepresident
in the
middle
of March
2011,
and will
have up
to May
2011 to
present
their
candidates
for
departamental
(municipal)
authorities.
Rivas
said
that the
current
members
of the
Council
have
participated
in at
least
five of
30
electoral
processes
celebrated
in
Nicaragua
since
1980
until
now.
The
magistrates
will not
count
votes,
since
this
responsibility
will be
for the
Reception
Boards
in all
the
departments.
After
the
convoking
announced
Thursday,
it is
assumed
that
political
organizations
opposed
to the
National
Sandinista
Liberation
Front
(government)
will
register
for the
elections,
despite
their
criticisms
of the
Electoral
Council
and of
Rivas in
particular,
who they
accuse
of
supposed
fraud in
the
municipal
elections
of 2008.
