ARESEP
Calls
For
Better
Rural
Potable
Water
Systems
Costa
Rica's
regulator
of
public
services
and
prices
regulator,
the
Autoridad
Regulador
de
Servicios
Públicos
(Aresep)
has
called
for
local
governments
to
improve
the
quality
of rural
potable
water
supply
systems.
According
to a
study
carried
out by
Aresep
across
80 local
water
and
sewerage
associations
(Asadas),
many
rural
systems
lack
water
meters
and
pipelines,
and
chlorination
levels
are
often
deficient.
In
addition,
many
rural
areas
are
entirely
lacking
in
sanitation
infrastructure
such as
sewerage
and
wastewater
treatment
systems,
the
Aresep
said.
Asadas
serve
around
1.2
million
people
in Costa
Rica,
working
under an
agreement
with,
although
independently
from,
national
water
and
sewerage
utility,
the
Instituto
Costarricense
de
Acueductos
y
Alcantarillados
(AyA).
In
August,
AyA
president
Oscar
Nuñez
announced
some
US$480
million
dollars
is
needed
to
improve
and
provide
maintenance
to rural
potable
water
networks.
