Brazil,
Colombia
Agree To
Work On
Regional
Stability
BRASILIA
- Brazil
and
Colombia
signed
cooperation
agreements
Wednesday
to
strengthen
overall
unity
and
regional
stability
during
Colombian
President
Juan
Manuel
Santos's
first
official
visit to
Brazil.
The
agreements
also aim
to
deepen
cooperation
between
the two
countries
in
economy,
technology,
environment
and
security.
Brazilian
President
Luiz
Inacio
Lula da
Silva
said in
his
luncheon
speech
that his
country
would be
in
solidarity
with
Colombia
during
their
struggle
for
peace.
"We are
no
longer
in the
region
with
conflict,
rebellion
and
censorship,"
he said.
An
agreement
of
intent
was also
subscribed
to
integrate
Colombia
in the
manufacturing
process
of the
military
transport
aircraft
Embraer
KC-390.
Santos,
who took
office
last
month,
stressed
that the
current
circumstances
are an
opportunity
to
achieve
"destiny
of
greatness."
The
tension
existing
in
Colombia,
Venezuela
and
Ecuador
should
be eased
as
"governments
fight,
people
suffer,"
Santos
said.
Marco
Aurelio
Garcia,
special
adviser
on
Brazil's
international
affairs,
reaffirmed
after
the
official
meeting
that the
conflict
with
rebels
of the
Revolutionary
Armed
Forces
of
Colombia
(FARC)
was
Colombia's
internal
issue.
"It
should
be
solved
by
Colombia
itself.
We will
get
involved
only if
the
Colombian
government
requests,"
he said.
The FARC,
notorious
for its
kidnapping
and drug
dealing
activities
in
Colombia,
has been
fighting
the
government
since
the
1960s.
