Intersectorial
Buses To
Start
Running
In
December,
Trasnport
Ministry
Assures
Remember
the "intersectoriales"
- the
buses
running
between
communities
without
having
to go in
and out
of San
José?
Well,
they may
be back
as early
as
December,
explained
the
Silvia
Bolaños,
director
of the
Ministerio
de Obras
Públicas
y
Transportes
(MOPT).
The plan
of the
intersectoriales
is to
move
people
from one
community
to
another,
like
from
Escazu
to
Alajuelita
- two
adjoining
communities
-
without
having
to go to
and out
of San
José
like it
has been
for
like,
ever.
The plan
would
allow
users of
public
transportation
to go
from
Santa
Ana to
Moravia
to
Heredia
and back
to Santa
Ana,
using a
series
of
intersectorial
buses
running
a ring
around
San
José.
The plan
was
introduced
in 2008.
Bus
companies
were
given
the
concession,
buses
were
bought
and the
government
set the
fares
and
installed
the stop
signs.
However,
the
project
came to
halt
within
days of
the
buses
starting
to roll
when
appeals
against
the
concession,
mainly
by a
losing
bidder,
put the
brakes
on the
project
and the
government,
though
it made
an
effort,
could
not
revive
the
project.
However,
the
Chinchilla
government
began
work on
the
project
immediately
after
taking
power on
May 8
and is
now
confident
that the
buses
will run
by the
end of
the
year.
The most
important
of the
routes
are:
Hatillo-Guadalupe;
Moravia-La
Valencia;
Escazú-Hospital
México;
Escazú-Alajuelita
and
Santa
Ana-San
Antonio
de Belén-La
Valencia,
and the
ones
that
will go
into
service
first.
The plan
not only
allows
users of
public
buses to
cut
their
travel
time but
also
decreases
congestion
in the
downtown
core of
San
José, as
fewer
buses
with
fewer
passengers
need to
enter
the city
core.
Noise
and
exhaust
reduction
of the
downtown
core is
another
benefit.
Currently,
a person
travelling
from
Escazú
to
Alajuelita
and
back,
must
take a
bus to
downtown
San José
where
they
will
transfer
to a bus
headed
to their
destination.
Escazú
and
Alajuelita
are
neighbouring
communities.
However,
established
bus
concessions
and
routes
prohibit
buses
from
running
from one
community
to the
other.
The
intersectoriales
or
interlineas
will be
frequent,
every 10
minutes
at peak
times
