Nicaragua
Calls
for More
U.S. Aid
to Drug
Trafficking

Vice
President
Jaime
Morales
said on
Friday
that the
U.S.
government
should
give
more
financial
aid to
Nicaragua
for
combating
drug
trafficking
in
Central
America.
Morales
said the
U.S.
government
had
given
more
funds to
Mexico
and
Colombia
by
expanding
the
Merida
Plan, a
security
cooperation
deal
between
the
United
States
and
Latin
American
countries
to fight
against
drug
trafficking,
transnational
organized
crime
and
money
laundering.
Nicaragua
was
included
for the
first
time in
the list
of
countries
with
more
drug
trafficking
in a
U.S.
government
report
to the
U.S.
Congress.
He said
millions
of U.S.
dollars
of drugs
were
captured
in
Nicaragua,
but that
was done
with
great
difficulty
due to
the lack
of
resources.
"U.S.
Ambassador
Roberto
Callahan
has said
the
Nicaraguan
police
and
military
forces
are
efficient
in
combating
the
international
drug
trafficking,"
Morales
told
local TV
channel
Canal
12.
"Don't'
forget
that the
main
victim
of drug
trafficking
is the
United
States,
so its
government
should
help
Nicaragua
combat
drug
trafficking
in the
region,"
he
added.
The U.S.
report
put
Nicaragua,
Costa
Rica and
Honduras
on a
list of
major
drug
trafficking
nations.
Among
the
seven
Central
American
countries,
only El
Salvador
and
Belize
are
still
not
considered
major
narcotics
trans-shipment
nations.
"As
Mexico
and
Colombia
continue
to apply
pressure
on drug
traffickers,
the
Central
America
countries
are
increasingly
targeted
for
trafficking
of
cocaine
and
other
drugs
primarily
destined
for the
United
States,"
U.S.
President
Barack
Obama
said on
Thursday.
