Salvador:
New Laws
to Fight
Crime
San
Salvador
- The
Minister
of
Justice
and
Security
in El
Salvador,
Manuel
Melgar,
announced
that two
bills to
curb the
activities
of
organized
crime in
the
country
are
being
analyzed.
One of
the
projects
seeks to
enable
the
confiscation
of
illegally
acquired
properties,
and the
second,
to
achieve
the
prohibition
of
weapons,
according
to the
official.
The
central
idea "is
to have
a legal
base
that
makes it
easier
to
confiscate
personal
assets
of
criminals,
because
(...)
everything
is
linked
to money
laundering."
He added
that
money is
the
final
goal of
kidnappings,
extortions,
and
sometimes
murders.
Minister
Melgar
said
that
another
powerful
tool in
fighting
crime
will be
the ban
on
carrying
weapons.
Melgar
said
that
when
completed
the
studies
of both
initiatives,
the
projects
will be
subjected
to the
approval
of
President
Mauricio
Funes
and
then, he
will
submit
them to
the
Legislative
Assembly.
