Has
New
Health
Minister
Dr.
Daisy
Corrales
was
announced
as Costa
Rica's
new Ministra
de
Salud
(Health
minister),
replacing
Maria
Luisa
Avila
who
resigned
last
month
after
almost
six
years
at
the
post.
Corrales
has
been
coordinator
of
the
country's
Red Nacional
de
Cuido
-
national
childcare
network
- a
program
launched
by
presidenta
Laura
Chincilla.
Starting
on
Monday
Corrales
will
take
over
the
country's
health
care
system
and
the
problems
of
the
crisis
at
the Caja
Costarricense
de
Seguro
Social
(CCSS
or
Caja),
the
country's
national
health
system.
Corrales
knows
first
hand
the
problems
at
the
Caja
being
a
former
employee.
She
is
well
known
in
the
health
system
for
her
capacity
for
team
work
and
leadership,
is a
surgeon
and
holds
a
Master's
Degree
in
health
services
administration.
Presidenta
Chinchilla
also
announced
the
appointment
of
Adolfo
Ortiz
as
the
vice-ministro
de
Salud.
Ortiz
has
worked
in
the
ministerio
de
Salud
administration,
as
well
as
for
the
pharmaceutical
Pfizer
in
Central
America.
Avila,
the
country's
most
popular
minister,
resigned
on
July
28
following
a
four
day
national
health
strike
at
the CCSS.
Avila
said
during
an
interview
with
Radio
Reloj
on
Thursday
that
she
is
stepping
down
over
differences
with
the
Presidenta about
the
handling
of
the Caja.
The
ministra,
at
least
until
Monday,
said
she
is
not
in
agreement
with
the
Caja's
self
administration
and
if
she,
as
Health
minister,
is
responsible
for
overseeing
the
Caja
she
should
also
have
the
posterity
to
intervene
the
state
health
system.
In
the
interview,
Avila
said
that
doña
Laura
never
asked
her
to
reconsider.
"She
asked
me
if
my
mind
was
made
up.
I
said
yes
and
that
was
that",
said
Avila. |
