Tax
Delayed
As
Opposition
Legislators
Consult
Constitutional
Court
A
group
of
eleven
legislators
have
asked
the
Constitutional
Court
for
a
consultation
on
the
proposed
corporations
tax
law.
The
move
will
mean
a
delay
of
the
bill
for
of
at
least
four
weeks.
Opposition
legislators
are
opposed
to
the
bill
that
received
first
reading
approval,
wanting
changes
made
to
the
text,
namely
eliminating
a
number
of
loopholes
that
would
allow
the
transfer
of
assets
without
the
payment
of
taxes.
The
government
is
insisting
the
bill
be
approved
as
it
is.
The
bill
would
impose
a
us$300
annual
tax
on
all
active
corporations
and
us$150
for
inactive.
The
tax
on
corporations
would
raise
some
˘38
billion
colones
a
year
that
the
government
is
earmarking
to
combat
crime.
The
signatories
to
the
request
are:
Walter
Cespedes,
Claudio
Monge,
Justo
Orozco,
Danilo
Cubero,
Damaris
Quintana,
Marielos
Alfaro,
Ernesto
Chavarria,
Manuel
Hernández,
Patricia
Perez
Mireya
Zamora
and
Adonay
Enriquez.
Cespedes,
leading
the
Partido
Unidad
Social
Cristiana
(PUSC),
said
the
move
was
due
to
the
refusal
of
the
Partido
Liberación
Nacional
(PLN)
party
to
negotiate
and
to
serve
as a
lesson.
Francisco
Chacon
of
the
PLN
said
that
this
is
just
a
delaying
tactic
by
the
opposition
of a
bill
that
has
the
backing
of
the
majority
of
the
legislators.
At
Casa
Presidencial,
the
move
by
the
opposition
was
met
by
"great
distress",
according
to
the
Communications
minister,
Roberto
