To
Fidel
Gamboa
Thousands
attended
an
all
night
memorial
and
the
same
number
are
expected
to
take
part
in
the
funeral
of
Costa
Rican
musician
Fidel
Gamboa,
who
died
Sunday
of a
heart
attack.
Last
night
Costa
Rica's
Centro
Nacional
de
Arte
y
Cultura
was
filled
by
fans
who
wanted
to
say
their
last
goodbye
front
man
of
the
musical
group
Malpaís.
Family,
friends,
fellow
band
members,
colleagues
an
fans
all
lined
up
to
bid
their
farewell
to
an
immensily
talented
singer/songwriter.
The
line
began
Monday
afternoon
and
is
to
continue
until
8am
this
morning,
followed
by
funeral
and
burial
later
today.
Gamboa's
talent
was
featured
through
his
band
Mailpaís
which
fused
Latin
American
folk
and
jazz.
Gamboa
was
a
graduate
in
history
of
art
from
Cuba’s
University
of
Habana.
In
the
mid
nineties
was
awarded
Costa
Rica’s
Aquileo
Echeverría
Prize
for
his
work
Inhombre
- a
strings,
percussion
and
contralto
quartet.
For
decades
had
played
with
Costa
Rica’s
Adrián
Goizueta
experimental
group.
In
Costa
Rica,
he
did
the
soundtrack
for
both
short
and
feature
films
including:
Victor
Vega’s
Witches
and
Hilda
Hidalgo’s
Our
lady´s
passion
and
Of
love
and
other
demons

President
Laura
Chinchilla
and
the
Ministro de Cultura de Costa
Rica,
Manuel
Obregón,
pay
their
respects
on
Monday. |
Gamboa
has
recorded
with
Rubén
Blades
and
Pedro
Aznar
among
others.
Gamboa
performed
with
the
group
for
the
last
time
on
Saturday
night
at a
concert
in
Heredia’s
Club
212
with
Guatemalan
rock
band
Alex
Nahual.
He
suffered
a
heart
attack
shortly
after
the
show.
