Guatemala
to
Launch
Anti-Weapon
Drive
Guatemala
-
Three
municipalities
in
as
many
departments
in
Guatemala
will
begin
a
campaign
against
the
proliferation
of
arms
and
their
tragic
consequences
in
the
country.
The
campaign,
called
"I
am
Against
Violence,
I do
not
use
arms"
will
be
launched
on 1
and
2
September
as
part
of
the
nation's
first
Youth
Festival
for
Peace,
in
Chiquimula,
Alta
Verapaz
and
Escuintla,
and
later
it
will
cover
the
entire
nation.
Several
organizations,
including
UNESCO,
got
together
to
devise
the
campaign,
considering
it
necessary
in a
country
where
800,000
guns
circulate
illegally
along
with
14
million
bullets.
The
campaign
is
directed
at
the
entire
population,
but
special
emphasis
will
be
placed
on
adolescents
and
children,
whose
warlike
toys
will
be
collected,
destroyed
and
exchanged
for
educational
ones.
