Venezuelan
Opposition
Party
Proposes
Fugitive
as
Presidential
Candidate
Caracas
- The
Venezuelan
opposition
party
"Un
Nuevo
Tiempo"
Sunday
confirmed
it will
propose
Manuel
Rosales,
fugitive
from
justice
accused
of
corruption,
as
presidential
candidate
for
elections
in
December
2012.
Rosales,
former
governor
of Zulia
and
mayor of
Maracaibo,
has an
arrest
warrant
through
Interpol
and
lives in
Peru,
from
where he
maintains
an
aggressive
stance
against
the head
of state
Hugo
Chávez.
He left
Venezuela
clandestinely
in April
2009 to
avoid
prosecution
on
charges
of
illicit
enrichment.
According
to the
deputy
president
of "Un
Nuevo
Tiempo",
Enrique
Márquez,
Rosales
and the
current
governor
of
Zulia,
Pablo
Perez,
are the
candidates
the
party
will
present
to the
"Mesa de
la
Unidad",
entity
in
charge
of
seeking
agreement
between
the
opposition
political
organizations.
Rosales
competed
with
Chavez
in the
presidential
elections
and was
defeated
by a
wide
margin.
The
proposals
of the
party
"Un
Nuevo
Tiempo"
swell
the list
of
candidates
to face
Chavez
in the
upcoming
presidential
elections.
Chavez
will
represent
the
parties
and
grassroots
supporters
of the
change
process
called
Bolivarian
Revolution.
Possible
candidates
of the
opposition
are
Henrique
Capriles,
Maria
Corina
Machado,
Leopoldo
López
and
Henry
Ramos,
as
previously
announced.
The
announcement
of a
fugitive
to
aspire
to
Miraflores
follows
the
election
as
members
of the
"Mesa de
la
Unidad"
of Jose
Sanchez
(convicted
of
murder)
and
Biaggio
Pilieri
(indicted
for
corruption).
The
opposition
is
demanding
immunity
for both
parliamentary
candidates,
rejected
by
authorities
because
the
crimes
were
committed
and the
trials
began
before
they
were
sworn
in.
