US to
Promote
Plan
Colombia-Like
Project
in
Honduras
Tegucigalpa

Secretary
of State
for
International
Narcotics
and Law
Enforcement
Affairs,
William
Brownfield,
is
expected
to visit
Honduras,
where he
will
promote
a
project
similar
to
questioned
Plan
Colombia,
according
to
authorities.
"The
two-day
visit
(on
Wednesday
and
Thursday)
will
bring
very
important
announcements.
What we
want is
to have
in our
country
a Plan
Central
America,
as there
has been
a Plan
Colombia
or a
Plan
Merida,"
Secretary
of
Security
Oscar
Alvarez
told
journalists.
Conceived
in 1999
and
presented
as an
initiative
to fight
drug
trafficking,
Plan
Colombia
is an
instrument
through
which
Washington
increased
its
interference
and
military
presence
in the
region.
We want
for
Honduras
a Plan
Central
America
to help
all in
the
isthmus
to
confront
the
scourge
of drug
trafficking,
which
boasts
very
powerful
tentacles,"
said
Alvarez,
who is
scheduled
to meet
with
Brownfield
and
supervise
together
a Border
Police
drill
involving
US
advisers.
Brownfield
is also
expected
to meet
with
President
Porfirio
Lobo and
sign an
agreement
on
prison
management
and
border
security,
according
to the
US
Embassy
in
Tegucigalpa.
Brownfield
was
preceded
by Air
Force
Commander
of the
US
Southern
Command,
Glenn
Spears,
who met
with
Defense
Minister
Marlon
Pascua
in
Tegcigalpa
on
Tuesday.
Brownfieldâ�Ös
visit is
part of
a tour
also
including
Guatemala,
El
Salvador
and
Colombia.
Washington
holds
Latin
American
countries
responsible
for drug
trafficking,
in spite
of being
the
worldâ�Ös
largest
drug
consumer,
with
billions
of
dollars
in
revenues.
