Week
in
Nicaragua

The
inclusion
of
the
Cathedral
of
Leon
on
UNESCO''s
list
of
World
Heritage
sites
was
one
of
the
major
developments
in
Nicaragua
this
week.
The
Catholic
church,
which
holds
the
tomb
of
National
Poet
Ruben
Dario,
was
designated
a
World
Heritage
site
on
Tuesday
at
the
headquarters
of
the
United
Nations
Educational,
Scientific
and
Cultural
Organization
(UNESCO)
in
Paris.
The
decision
was
warmly
welcomed,
and
authorities
from
the
Nicaraguan
Cultural
Institute
described
the
UNESCO
decision
as
"a
landmark
in
the
history
of
national
culture."
Another
major
event
this
week
was
the
arrival
of
the
first
10
of
350
buses
ordered
from
a
Mexican
company
to
modernize
urban
transportation
in
Managua.
All
vehicles
are
expected
to
be
running
on
Managua's
streets
this
year,
along
with
130
Russian-made
buses
bought
last
year
and
125
similar
buses
acquired
in
May.
In
compliance
with
a
commitment
made
by
President
Daniel
Ortega
in
2007
when
he
took
office,
90
percent
of
the
capital's
fleet
of
800
buses
will
be
renovated.
The
seriousness
of
the
president's
commitments
was
evident
on
Friday,
when
new
houses
were
granted
to
families
who
were
staying
in
three
shelters
in
Managua
after
being
evacuated
from
their
homes
due
to
last
year's
heavy
rains.
So
far,
380
of
the
926
houses
that
have
been
built
in
the
new
neighborhood,
called
Villa
Solidaridad,
are
fully
equipped
and
ready
to
be
occupied
by
the
families,
as
part
of a
process
that
should
end
on
Saturday.
