The
12
traffic
cameras
installed
at
five
key
points
on
the
autopistas
General
Cañas
(San
José
-
Alajuela)
and
the
Florencio
del
Castillo
(San
José
-
Cartago)
and
the
Circunvalación
will
not
only
be
used
to
check
traffic
speed
and
other
traffic
infractions,
but
also
used
to
report
traffic
conditions.
Cesar
Quiros,
the
director
of
the
Policía
de
Tránsito,
explains
that
the
cameras
will
be
monitoring
traffic
conditions
on a
24/7
basis
and
traffic
conditions
will
be
reported
on a
map
elaborated
by
the
control
centre
and
update
on
the
website.
The
"electronic
eyes"
have
an
infrared
video
camera
with
a
radar
incorporated
in
the
system
which
will
also
control
room
staff
to
follow
the
"pulse"
of a
road.
Staff
can
monitor
traffic
conditions,
the
types
of
vehicles
on
the
road,
and
report
the
conditions
to
advise
drivers
of
problems
on
the
roads
and
suggest
alternatives
to
reduce
congestion.
The
Ministerio
de
Obras
Públicas
y
Transportes
(MOPT)
installed
the
cameras
at
the
end
of
the
year
and
only
last
Friday
did
the
first
cameras
go
into
service,
those
on
the
Florencio
del
Castillo
-
with
the
rest
in
the
coming
days
and
weeks.
