Bolivia Takes Maritime Access Dispute to The Hague

La Paz -  Bolivia turned to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to evaluate its legal proceedings against Chile over access to the sea, and warned that its rights should be taken into account in a similar conflict between Chile and Peru. Peru sued Chile over the sovereignty of a Pacific coastal area of 37,900 square kilometers.

On July 8, a delegation headed by Ruben Saavedra, head of the Bolivian maritime strategic management authority, presented a diplomatic note to the International Court announcing Bolivia's stance.

The Foreign Ministry also informed the Peruvian and Chilean foreign ministries about the content of the note presented in The Hague.

Bolivia lost its 400-kilometer Pacific coast and a total of 120,000 square kilometers of land in the War of the Pacific (1879) against Chile.
