Bolivia
Takes
Maritime
Access
Dispute
to
The
Hague
La
Paz
-
Bolivia
turned
to
the
International
Court
of
Justice
in
The
Hague
to
evaluate
its
legal
proceedings
against
Chile
over
access
to
the
sea,
and
warned
that
its
rights
should
be
taken
into
account
in a
similar
conflict
between
Chile
and
Peru.
Peru
sued
Chile
over
the
sovereignty
of a
Pacific
coastal
area
of
37,900
square
kilometers.
On
July
8, a
delegation
headed
by
Ruben
Saavedra,
head
of
the
Bolivian
maritime
strategic
management
authority,
presented
a
diplomatic
note
to
the
International
Court
announcing
Bolivia's
stance.
The
Foreign
Ministry
also
informed
the
Peruvian
and
Chilean
foreign
ministries
about
the
content
of
the
note
presented
in
The
Hague.
Bolivia
lost
its
400-kilometer
Pacific
coast
and
a
total
of
120,000
square
kilometers
of
land
in
the
War
of
the
Pacific
(1879)
against
Chile. |
