In Upala, The Earth Literally Opened Up

The area of Upala continues to shake and roll after the 5.3 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Observatorio Vulcanologico y Sismologico de Costa Rica (Oviscoir) recorded the latest quake at 6:47am.

On Tuesday, at 2:11pm, the earthquake located 14 km southwest of Upala, felt in the areas of Guanacaste, Cuidad Quesada (San Carlos) and Monteverde, was followed by aftershocks of 4.8, 4.8 and 4.1 within an hour later.

The earthquake recorded Wednesday morning registered 3.2 with a depth of 10 km and located 23 km southwest of Upala (10.789 / -85.1995).

No reports of injuries or fatalities were reporter. However, many reports of damages caused by the tremors have been coming in, mainly items shaken off shelves and walls cracking.

In the area of Guacalito de Upala, more than 90 aftershocks (all under 1 on the Richter scale) have been felt, some 25 houses suffering damages, as well as 3 bridges and several roads.

In one point, the earth literally opened up, instilling fear and panic in the residents of the area.

One resident said, "I have lived through earthquakes before, but, never like this".

Experts say the cause of the quakes and aftershocks is due to movements in a local fault.
