Costa Rica's Tourism Board Add "Boutique" Hotel Category

The Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) - Costa Rican Tourism Board - added "boutique" hotels to its list of seven regulations of Tourist Accommodations.

The new classification is of hotels with a minimum of five rooms and no maximum, with three stars or more, offering private bathroom and a high quality of service and comfort in addition to luxurious facilities.

The decision was approved by the ICT board on February 15, 2011 and published on 18 July in the Official government publication, La Gaceta.

Currently there are 45 registered hotels of the kind in the country with a total of 1.235 rooms, that have a Tourism declaration and the majority categorized between four and five stars>

The hotels are located throughout the country, though the majority can be found in provinces of
San José, Puntarenas and Alajuela.

The areas of Santa Ana, San José downtown and Aguirre (Quepos) have the high concentration of boutique hotels.

These types of hotels are aimed at tourists who prefer personalized service in a luxurious surrounding.

Categories

Hotel: Minimum 10 rooms with private bath, daily rate and offers a restaurant, cafe and bar.

Apartotel (apartments): At least 10 apartments with one or more bedrooms, bathroom, dining room and kitchen furnished properly. Includes cleaning service and guest reception.

Albergues (Hostels): Minimum of seven rooms with a bedroom and private bath. There are several types, according to the design features and specialization: Ecotourism, beach, mountain and juvenile.

Villas – cabañas - cabinas (Villas - cabins - cabins): Homogeneous groups of at least seven residential units, with private bathroom, one or more bedrooms, dining room and kitchen. They are usually located on the beach, rivers, lakes and mountains .-

Pensión (Pension): Establishment with personalized service with a minimum of five housing units equipped with private bathrooms, cafeteria, reception and occasional lunches and dinners are offered on an informal level .-

Boteles: Hotel that is located on a floating or a passenger vessel is frozen permanently or temporarily to perform these functions .-

Posada: Has a minimum of three rooms with private bathroom, offers food services and is in a rural setting.
