Monday Is A Holiday in Costa Rica

Monday, July 25, is a holiday in Costa Rica, as it celebrates the 187 years of the Anexión del Partido de Nicoya (Annexation of Nicoya) - the joining of Guanacaste as part of Costa Rica.

Schools, state institutions and many businesses are closed on Monday.  Major retail stores and malls are open. The vehicular restrictions of San José are also suspended for Monday.

During the long weekend there are a number of celebrations taking place in different communities, though the main centre of celebrations is in Nicoya.

In San José, as well as Heredia and other communities, residents will be marching for peace to raise awareness of the increase in crime and that "more Costa Ricans are in want of peace than the criminals".

Also, on Sunday (July 24) is the celebration of the Colombian day of Independence. Although Colombia celebrated its independence on July 20, Colombians in Costa Rica will do so tomorrow. The centre of activities is in Desamparados.

Whatever your reason to celebrate, the weather is expected to be sunny and hot and the rainy season to continue on hold for a couple of more days.
