Ortega
Takes
Big
Lead
In
Polls

Nicaraguan
President
Daniel
Ortega
has
a
strong
lead
over
his
opponents
heading
into
November's
presidential
election,
an
opinion
poll
showed
Monday.
Of
those
polled,
56.5%
would
vote
for
Ortega,
over
40%
more
than
would
vote
for
his
closest
rival
Fabio
Gadea,
a
lead
big
enough
for
the
incumbent
to
win
in
the
first
round
of
elections,
pollster
M&R
Consultants
said.
According
to
the
poll,
Gadea,the
candidate
for
UNE
alliance
led
by
the
Independent
Liberal
Party
(PLI),
is
supported
by
14.1%
of
voters.
He
is
followed
by
former
president
Arnoldo
Aleman,
a
Liberal
Constitutionalist
Party
(PLC)
candidate,
whose
approval
rating
is
5.8%.
The
poll
was
conducted
in
June
but
was
not
published
by
the
local
daily
La
Prensa
until
Monday.
The
voting
council
of
Nicaragua's
Supreme
Electoral
Court
(CSE)
has
carried
out
"a
verification
process"
for
registered
voters
in
138
of
the
country's
153
municipalities.
This
is
to
ensure
that
everything
is
ready
before
Nicaraguans
cast
their
votes
on
Nov.
6
for
a
president,
a
vice
president,
90
seats
of
the
national
parliament
and
20
seats
of
the
Central
American
Parliament
(Parlacen).
CSE
announced
that
almost
two
million
Nicaraguans
have
verified
their
voter
registration
in
the
Election
Census.
Electoral
authorities
estimated
3.3
million
voters,
or
52%
of
Nicaragua's
registered
voters,
will
vote
in
the
elections,
CSE
president
Roberto
Rivas
said.
Speaking
at a
press
conference,
Rivas
said
he
would
provide
a
copy
of
the
Election
Census
in
the
next
few
days
to
all
the
political
parties
participating
in
the
general
election.
