Catholic Church In Costa Rica Expects More Than 1 Million And A Half Pilgrims

Although the Romería - annual pilgrimage - is not until August 2, dozens of faithful have already begun and/or completed their walk to the Basílica de los Ángeles, in Cartago, to pay homage to the patron Saint of Costa Rica, La Virgen de Los Angeles or La Negrita as she is affectionately called.

As for the last 300 years the tradition continues. This year, as up to one and a half million or more are expected to descend on Cartago between now and Tuesday.

The event is a religious one, perhaps the biggest event in terms of people to take part in celebrations by the Catholic church in Costa Rica.

Randall Zamora, the Catholic priest in charge of the event, explained that there will be activities in preparation of the "fiesta patronal" as well as a score of activities on August 2, including a speech by presidenta Laura Chinchilla.

You do not have to be Catholic to join participate in the Romería nor the activities at the Basilica.

In aid of the "romeros", the Policía de Tránsito will be on hand for traffic control and closure of routes on August 1 and 2, the Fuerza Pública (police) will be keeping an eye on the situation, especially for hooligans and the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) will be manning first aid posts between Tres Rios and Cartago.

August 2 is a paid holiday in Costa Rica.
