Fatal Accident Leaves Four Dead Pavas, Two The Day Before On The Same Spot

The crossing of the area of the American Embassy in San José was the scene of two separate fatal accidents on subsequent days leaving behind six dead.

The first was Friday morning when two men on a scooter ran head on to an oncoming vehicle. The crash occurred diagonal to the gasoline station La Favorita, when the two men on the scooter, who moments earlier had left a bar a block away and speeding collide head on with a vehicle that was also believed to be speeding.

The driver of the vehicle was unhurt and fled the scene, giving himself up to authorities some hours later and found to have a 0.87 blood alcohol reading, which in Costa Rica is impaired as the maximum is 0.75.

The accident occurred at 4:15am Friday and tied up traffic almost to noon as the main San José - Pavas road from Plaza Rohrmoser to the US Embassy was closed as authorities conducted their investigation. The impact was so violent that debris spread for some two blocks.

Saturday morning the same two blocks was the scene of the second fatal accident in two days, when a Nissan Xtrail ran the traffic lights diagonal to the US Embassy slamming into another vehicle.

The impact was so that three of the passengers were thrown from the vehicle, just like in the movies a witnesses said, while the fourth was trapped in the vehicle, authorities finding him clutching onto a bible. All four died in the accident.

The accident occurred at 2:30am Saturday.

Authorities said that Nissan vehicle had left the Hollywood night (strip) club in La Sabana after firing a number of gunshots at the front of the club after arguing about the bill and was the focus of a police chase.

The driver Nissan was found to have a 1.40 reading on the breathalyzer.
