El
Salvador:
Funes
Government
Celebrates
2
Years
of
Achievements
San
Salvador
-
The
Mauricio
Funes
administration
on
Wednesday
is
celebrating
two
years
in
power,
and
reported
a
long
list
of
achievements,
mainly
in
the
social
sphere.
Funes
took
office
two
months
after
the
electoral
victory
of
the
Farabundo
Marti
National
Liberation
Front(FMLN),
which
paved
the
way
for
the
first
majority
left
government
in
national
history.
The
victory
of
the
FMLN,
which
just
15
years
ago
went
from
being
an
insurgent
force
to a
legal
political
party,
also
ended
20
years
in
power
of
the
extreme-right
Nationalist
Republican
Alliance
(ARENA).
The
new
cabinet
managed
to
turn
around
the
economy,
and
in
2010
the
nation
began
a
slow
recovery
process.
The
GDP
rose
from
zero
to
1.4
percent,
and
is
expected
to
rise
to
2.5
percent
this
year.
In
terms
of
social
programs,
one
important
plan
provides
school
supplies,
two
uniforms
and
a
pair
of
shoes
every
year
to
over
1.377
million
public
school
students,
as
well
as
food.
The
plan
helped
raise
enrollment
rates
by
seven
percent,
fight
school
drop-out
rates,
and
encourages
better
learning.
A
comprehensive
health
reform
is
bringing
medical
attention
to
the
most
remote
parts
of
the
nation,
and
began
with
eliminating
fees
at
public
hospitals.
A
press
release
from
the
FMLN
Political
Committee
ratified
that
it
would
continue
boosting
changes
in
the
country
to
benefit
its
poorest
citizens. |
