work
in
Panama
and
develop
new
forms

child
labor,
denounced
Lavitola
Angelica,
who
is
the
director
of
Casa
Esperanza.
Lavitola
said
the
child
labor
increased
in
agriculture
in
the
central
provinces,
citing
specifically
the
regions
of
Santa
Ana,
Curundu,
El
Chorrillo
and
Colon.
Lavitola
said
that
in
the
latter
province
there
are
children
who
dive
into
the
sea
to
extract
metals
and
other
wastes
from
boats
for
sale,
and
that
two
children
drowned
when
they
made
that
work.
Lavitola
added
that
60,000
children
work,
more
than
30
percent
is
not
going
to
school
and
over
50
percent
suffered
from
malnutrition
or
disease.
She
acknowledged
that
child
labor
is a
consequence
of
extreme
poverty
and
that
family
must
be
strengthened.
Casa
Esperanza
(a
nonprofit
organization)
believes
that
replacing
the
family
is
not
the
solution,
but
when
it
is
shown
that
there
are
real
serious
abuse,
such
cases
will
be
reported
and
children
placed
with
another
family,
she
said
