Women
Participate
In "Slutwalk"
Several
hundred
women
took
part
today
in
the
so-called
"Marcha
de
las
Putas"
(Slutwalk)
to
draw
national
attention
on
the
high
rates
of
violence
against
women
in
Nicaragua,
according
to
statistics
from
organizations
is
one
of
the
highest
in
the
region
.
The
march
of
Nicaraguan
women
held
in
the
northern
province
of
Matagalpa,
about
130
kilometers
from
the
capital,
was
led
by
young
women
dressed
"like
whores",
who
carried
a
long
banner
with
the
inscription:
"Marcha
de
las
Putas",
Nicaragua"
.
This
type
of
protest
has
taken
place
in
cities
across
the
world,
commissioned
following
the
comment
from
a
Canadian
police
noted
in a
lecture
at a
Canadian
university,
that
women
should
avoid
dressing
provocatively
or
else
they
would
be
victims
of
sexual
violence.
The
representative
of
the
Red
de
mujeres
contra
la
Violencia
de
Matagalpa
(Network
of
Women
Against
Violence
Matagalpa),
Edurne
Larracoechea,
told
reporters
that
the
march
was
pursuing
the
objective
to
highlight
the
message
that
women
should
be
respected
regardless
of
their
"way
of
dressing,
of
thinking
or
living.
"
"There
is
no
justification
for
being
attacked,
we
do
not
intend
to
promote
prostitution,
we
want
to
raise
to
the
country
on
the
urgent
need
that
women
are
to
be
respected
as
human
beings
with
rights,
dress
as
they
dress,
think
and
think
and
live
as
they
live",
stressed
the
head
of
the
civil
body.
She
added
that
the
women
of
Nicaragua
and
the
world
are
"tired"
of
so
much
aggression,
so
much
violence,
so
many
killings
associated
with
the
condition
of
gender".
The
march,
which
was
without
incident,
was
encouraged
by
the
national
group
"Xolobatucada"
with
samba
rhythms
and
"Maypole",
a
blistering
pace
typical
of
the
Nicaraguan
Caribbean,
predominantly
Afro
descendants.
Some
young
women
dressed
in
miniskirts,
blouses
with
striking
necklines,
shorts,
jeans
and
high
heels
carrying
banners
with
slogans
like:
"We
are
whores,
so
what?"
Or
"No
means
no.
"
In
London,
thousands
of
women
also
participated
in
the
Slutwalk.
The
first
Slutwalk
was
held
in
Toronto,
which
featured
a
huge
crowd
of
women
-
and
male
supporters
-
many
dressed
provocatively
to
emphasize
their
point.
Within
weeks,
similar
marches
had
been
organized
across
north
America
and
now
the
UK
is
following
suit,
with
events
planned
in
Cardiff
and
Edinburgh
as
well
as
London's
own
contribution.
The
London
march
kicked
off
behind
a
banner
reading
"Slut
Walk
London:
because
we've
had
enough".
Others
carried
placards
reading
"It's
a
dress,
not
a
yes",
"Women
against
rape",
"No
means
no"
and
"Hijabs,
hoodies,
hotpants,
our
bodies,
our
choices".
One
sign
read
"We
are
all
chambermaids"
- a
reference
to
the
Dominique
Strauss-Kahn
sex
