UN
Office
in
Guatemala
Condemns
Pre-election
Violence
Guatemala
-
The
Office
of
the
UN
Human
Rights
Commissioner
in
Guatemala
condemned
what
it
called
intolerable,
ongoing
election-related
violence
in
this
country.
In a
press
release,
the
UN
agency
condemned
attacks
against
people
involved
in
the
election
process,
including
those
who
work
for
the
Supreme
Election
Court.
As
part
of
those
violent
incidents,
two
mayoral
candidates
for
mayors
were
recently
killed,
and
a
third
was
injured
in
San
Jose
Pinula
municipality,
near
the
capital.
Another
two
candidates
were
killed
earlier
in
the
department
of
Jutiapa,
one
of
them
a
woman.
The
UN
office
described
the
escalation
in
violence
as
intolerable,
and
urged
all
competent
authorities
to
carry
out
immediate,
thorough,
and
effective
investigations
to
stop
it.
It
also
called
for
identifying,
trying,
and
punishing
anyone
who
attempts
against
the
life
and
physical
integrity
of
those
persons
and
their
families.
Such
actions
endanger
the
free
right
to
vote
and
to
run
for
office,
as
well
as
freedom
of
speech
and
freedom
of
assembly,
which
are
essential
to
guaranteeing
a
democratic
election
process.
