El
Salvador:
Soldiers
Linked
to
Guatemalan
Gangs
San
Salvador
-
More
than
1,800
hand
grenades
stolen
from
the
Salvadoran
Army
were
meant
for
the
Zetas,
a
Guatemalan
drug-trafficking
gang,
according
to
intelligence
reports
on
Friday.
Six
Salvadoran
soldiers
detained
in
May
and
accused
of
robbery
were
in
contact
with
the
Zetas,
which
was
initially
created
in
Mexico,
said
Defense
Minister
Gen.
David
Munguia.
The
soldiers
were
supposed
to
destroy
weapons
in
disuse,
but
instead
saved
them
to
sell
to
the
cartel.
Drug
cartels
have
been
attempting
to
infiltrate
police
and
the
military,
said
President
Mauricio
Funes
in a
recent
international
conference
on
security.
Thanks
to
intelligence
services,
the
Zetas
and
other
drug-trafficking
gangs
have
not
penetrated
Salvadoran
security
institutions,
Munguia
said.
Since
last
year,
the
military
and
the
National
Civil
Police
are
working
together
to
guard
streets,
prisons,
and
the
most
dangerous
areas.
Citizen
safety
is
one
of
the
peoples
main
concerns
and,
since
last
year,
security
institutions
have
begun
turning
around
spiraling
crime,
according
to
official
reports.
