Colombia's
Ex
Attorney
Genera
Accused
of
Alleged
Links
with
Paramilitary
Bogotá -
Former
presidential
candidate
Gustavo
Petro
has
demanded
a probe
on
allegations
that the
former
Prosecutor
General
of
Colombia
was
supported
by
paramilitary
forces
in the
elections
for that
office.
Petro
said
that the
Office
of the
Prosecutor
General
must
begin an
investigation
on that
case
which
involves
directly
the
current
Colombian
ambassador
to
Egypt,
Mario
Iguaran.
According
to a
diplomatic
cable
revealed
by
Wikileaks,
the U.S.
Embassy
in
Bogotá
in 2008
echoed
the
rumors
about
the
interference
of the
paramilitaries
in the
election
of
Iguaran,
then
Deputy
Minister
of
Justice,
as
Prosecutor
General.
The
cable
said
there
were
rumors
that the
demobilized
paramilitary
leader
Carlos
Mario
Jimenez,
alias
Macaco,
paid to
members
of the
Supreme
Court,
to elect
Mario
Iguaran
as the
Attorney
General.
Petro
said
that the
Office
of the
Prosecutor
General
must
investigate
Mr.
Macaco
and
where
the
money
is.
Petro
remembered
that
Iguaran
was the
main
promoter
of the
controversial
Justice
and
Peace
Law when
he was
Deputy
Minister
of
Justice
during
the
government
of
former
president
Alvaro
Uribe
(2002-2010),
promoter
of the
initiative.
That
draft
was put
into
force in
2005 and
demobilized
more
than
31,000
members
of
United
Self-defense
Forces
of
Colombia,
a
right-wing
extremist
paramilitary
group
which
was
rescinded
in 2006.
