El Salvador Commemorates Missing Children´s Day

San Salvador - El Salvador on Tuesday is commemorating Missing Children''s Day, dedicated to children who disappeared during the 1980-1992 military conflict.

President Mauricio Funes will lead the official ceremony at the International Fair and Convention Center.

The day´s activities include one minute of silence in schools; the issuing of a commemorative stamp; and a university essay contest award ceremony.

UN Goodwill Ambassador and singer Julietta Venegas will perform a special concert day, the Secretariat of Social Inclusion announced.

Ester Alvarenga informed that the Pro Busqueda Association, which she directs, has documented 800 cases, solving 363 of them and giving victims the opportunity to find their families.

The government created a National Commission to Find Missing Children for that same purpose.

On Monday, a group of youngsters who were reunited with their families demanded more a effectiveness on the part of the government commission, and for the army to apologize for forced disappearances during the war.

The issue of missing children, many of whom were murdered in army massacres, is one of the open wounds in this nation.

Last year on National Missing Children´s Day, the Salvadoran government apologized for all the human rights violations committed during the 12 years of conflict..
