El Salvador to Develop Agriculture

San Salvador - The Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes ratified government plans to turn agriculture and livestock into the locomotive of the development and fight against poverty in this country.

Funes made reference to this topic in the opening ceremony of the agriculture year 2011 held in the municipality of Jiliquilisco in the department of Usulután, known as the barn of the nation.

In this regard, he recalled that during the governments of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) from a 1989 to 2009, the rural family was abandoned and condemned to poverty.

He said that those responsible for the lack of cheap food on the poorâ�Ös tables are the governors of the last 20 years, who destroyed the Salvadoran agriculture.

His government began to change this situation of absolute abandonment when he took office on June 1, 2009.

Among the new government programs he mentioned the Plan of Family Farming with financial help and technical assistance.

He said his government gives peasants free packets of seeds and fertilizers with a budgetary cost of U.S. $15 million.
