Hondurans
Demand
Closing
of
School
of the
Americas
Tegucigalpa
- Over
100
Honduran
and U.S.
people
gathered
outside
the U.S.
Embassy
in
Tegucigalpa
to
demand
the
closing
of the
School
of the
Americas.
According
to press
reports,
demonstrators
urged
government
officials
and
civil
society
organizations
to
prevent
more
Honduran
soldiers
from
being
trained
at that
base.
Catholic
priest
Roy
Bourgois,
founder
of the
School
of the
Americas
Watch,
led the
protest.
The
School
of the
Americas
was
founded
in 1946
and
operated
in
Panama
until
1984,
when it
was
moved to
Fort
Benning,
Georgia,
in the
United
States.
As of
2004,
Honduras
had sent
nearly
3,566
soldiers
to train
at the
School
of the
Americas,
many of
whom
applied
in this
Central
American
country
the
torture
skills
learned
there.
The
high-ranking
officers
who took
part in
the coup
against
President
Manuel
Zelaya
in June
2009
trained
in what
is also
known as
School
of
Assassins.
