Fight against Poverty in Honduras Postponed

Tegucigalpa - The Honduran government has pushed poverty reduction into the background and prioritized the implementation of programs agreed with the International Monetary Fund, reported an economist on Monday.

According to the National Statistics Institute, in this country of eight million inhabitants, 60 percent live below the poverty line, and in rural areas the rate rises to 65.4 percent.

The government only uses 1.5 percent of GDP on social spending, while focusing on improving macroeconomic indicators, stated to the press Henry Rodriguez, who is an expert from the National Autonomous University of Honduras.

The government's interest has focused on implementing the program of measures agreed with the IMF, but we must not forget poverty, Rodriguez said.

A mission from the International Monetary Fund is launching Monday a two-week visit to Honduras, where it will evaluate compliance with the conditions required by the financial institution to grant a loan of $83 million.
