Costa Rica State Doctors On Strike!

Monday the members of the Unión Médica Nacional (National Medical Union) announced an indefinite general strike by doctors at all state hospitals and clinics in Costa Rica, beginning this morning (Tuesday) at 7am.

The action is to leverage the situation between health authorities and anesthesiologists who have been on strike at state hospitals for the last 12 days.

The meeting of 600 doctors lasted four hours, agreeing to support the strike by anesthesiologists.

Doctors say they will provide emergency services only, that is, those patients with scheduled appointments, surgeries, etc. will not be attended.

The Unión Médica Nacional is asking the Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social (CCSS), specifically its medical director, Ileana Balmaceda and CCSS director, Zeirith Rojas, to leave the Caja, the suspension of health orders, the reinstatement of the two doctors fired last Friday and finally to curb administrative procedures that began last week.

On Monday officials of the CCSS and doctors were to meet in the afternoon, but the doctors did not make the meeting.

As of Monday more than 2.100 surgeries have been suspended at state hospitals.
