El Salvador Seeks International Aid to Face Disaster

The Salvadoran Government continues a diplomatic offensive in New York and in the Swiss city of Geneva to collect funds to reconstruct the country after 10 consecutive days of heavy rain in this capital, according to official reports.

In the capital, the Government and the United Nations will call for international humanitarian aid for the nearly 300,000 victims.

Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes emphasized that the magnitude of the damage caused by the overflowing of rivers, floods and landslides in 10 percent of the national territory is beyond the State┤s capacity to address.

A Salvadoran request equivalent to 15.7 million USD was presented on Tuesday, according to Elisabeth Byrs, spokesperson of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The official noted that those funds would be allocated to cover the necessities of 300,000 people until April 2012.
